The tunneler burrows into dung and eats from within its tunnel. When the female is ready to lay her eggs, she digs a tunnel at an angle seven or eight inches into the ground beneath the dung. She fills the chamber with food from the mass of dung above the tunnel, choosing the softest portions. Shoveling the dung with her legs, she packs the chamber laying her eggs at intervals as she fills. After two weeks, the eggs hatch and the larvae eat the dung packed around them until there is only a thin layer between each larva. By this time, they are fully grown and emerge from the tunnel.
